Haidong Gumdo – Korean Sword Martial Art – An Introduction and Comparison

It’s time to set the record straight about Haidong Gumdo. For those unfamiliar with this, Haidong Gumdo is a Korean martial art focused on the use of swords. The visual aesthetic is familiar to most Americans, and will remind one of the Japanese samurai due to the shape of the sword and the dress which is worn. Haidong Gumdo is about grace. It is about precision, and power. It is about mastering one’s own mind and body in the development of physical skill. It is not, however, about cultural imitations or derivations.

The Sword

The sword used in Haidong Gumdo practice is known by multiple names, including hwando and jingum, which is the equivalent of the Japanese word shinken, or “real sword”. It is important for those more familiar with Japanese sword arts to realize that the jingum is not a katana, despite certain surface similarities. This is largely related to differences in cutting technique. While historical Korean swords come in many shapes and sizes, the modern jingum is easy to distinguish from a Japanese katana by the shape of the tip and the method in which the blade is mounted to the handle. Quality jingum typically have a wider tip, and are mounted with a pin and bolt in the handle.

The Uniform

The Haidong Gumdo uniform used by the World Haidong Gumdo Federation is something else that causes confusion to those more familiar with Japanese sword arts. This is because of the pants that are worn, which flare outwards similar to the Japanese hakama. As with the sword, however, there are differences between the Japanese and Korean styles. The Japanese hakama are worn outside of the gi (or jacket), while in Haidong Gumdo, the jacket is worn over the pants. Since the top of the pants is therefore not visible, they have an elastic waist, rather than the elaborate ties of the hakama.

In addition, Haidong Gumdo makes use of a short sleeved dobak, or uniform. This allows more freedom of movement, without worrying about catching the sword in the sleeve. Finally, Haidong Gumdo makes use of colored belts to denote rank, similar to more familiar arts such as the Korean Taekwondo, or the Japanese Judo.

Relations with “other” sword arts

Unfortunately, the aesthetic similarities between the Korean and Japanese sword arts, coupled with a history of tension between these two peoples, has given rise to a significant amount of misunderstanding and strife in the martial arts community.

This is not to say anything at all negative about Japanese sword martial arts! I feel no need, for example, to dispute the history or legitimacy of Iaido, which is a modern Japanese sword art as practiced by the All Japan Kendo Federation. It is beautiful and graceful, and, I might add, new. The same is true of Haidong Gumdo.

Yet the martial arts community remains plagued by the tension which has existed between these peoples for quite some time. As American practitioners of these arts in particular, we should respect each others’ chosen disciplines. That’s not even to begin to mention the negativity which arises from meaningless debates about historical origins, uniform styles, or effectiveness. This kind of slander only serves to weaken us in our pursuit of mastery.

So let’s move the discussion in a more positive direction. Do you practice a martial art? What do we even mean when we use that term?

The Meaning of “the Way”

I would argue that sports such as MMA (“mixed martial arts”) do not fit the definition of martial arts in the traditional sense. The word Gumdo translates as “the way of the sword”. “Way” is used here the same as it is used in Taoism. In fact, “Tao” and “Do” are the same character, pronounced differently in different languages. To quote Wikipedia:

“The martial arts are codified systems and traditions of combat practices, which are practiced for a variety of reasons: self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness, as well as mental, physical, and spiritual development.”

That second phrase is important. A significant part of martial arts practice is mental, physical, and spiritual development. So this would include the various styles of Chinese Kung Fu, Japanese Karate, and Korean Taekwondo, among others. It includes the various ryu of Japanese Samurai Swordsmanship, and yes, it includes Haidong Gumdo, an indigenous Korean sword art. Sure, nothing develops in a vacuum, and Korea necessarily shows influences related to its geographical location and its interaction with other cultures. But that does not diminish the art or its practitioners.

Haidong Gumdo focuses on multiple aspects of swordsmanship, from drawing and sheathing, to forms work and stance training, to test cutting with a live blade. There is no trick to being able to perform these cuts, whether on bamboo or other targets – no stage magic, just years of training and practice. Personal betterment and a constant striving to improve technique are what makes it work.

Martial artists of all disciplines should be interested to see a positive sharing of ideas. Show me some of your own martial arts practice, and let’s compare. Anyone in the area is also welcome to visit my studio, Blue Mountain Martial Arts, to see my sword work first hand. Check out http://www.BlueMountainMA.com for more information.

How to Dress Your Child For Indoor Ice Skating

Most indoor ice skating rinks maintain a temperature between 45 and 60 degrees, depending on the temperature outside. When you are dressing your child for ice skating lessons or free skating at the ice rink, your first challenge will be warmth.

Skaters will be exercising strenuously, so it is important to dress your child in thin layers that can be removed easily as their bodies warm up. Avoid dressing your child in a bulky winter coat, as heavy coats make it difficult to move freely. A warm turtleneck under a warm, close-fitting sweater will keep your child warmer than a winter coat, and will permit free movement.

Many girls want to wear a skating dress. If you plan to have your daughter take lessons, then a simple skating dress and tights may be a good investment. However, if she is simply going to skate recreationally now and then, this might not be an investment you want to make.

Close fitting sweat pants or zipped wind pants are good choices for both boys and girls. Jeans do not have much ability to stretch, they easily absorb moisture, and they are very slow to dry, which makes them a less optimum choice for skating.

One of the most important parts of your skater’s wardrobe should be a comfortable pair of thin, seamless socks. A sock with seams can rub against the foot and cause blisters. Because skate boots are designed to be tight, thick socks can squeeze the foot and reduce circulation, which will make your child’s feet feel cold more quickly.

If you child will be renting ice skates, bring along a thicker pair of socks to wear over the thin pair to provide extra padding in case the rented rink skates don’t fit perfectly or are well-worn.

For several reasons skaters should always wear gloves. Gloves obviously will keep a skater’s hands warm. They also provide some protection in case of a fall on the ice or if another skater runs into a child who has fallen.

A warm wool hat will keep your skater’s head and ears warm. Avoid any head covering that could impair your skater’s vision. “Hoodies” or parka hoods should be avoided.

For the same reason, skaters should never wear scarves, which can obstruct vision or catch a skate. Many rinks prohibit any kind of scarf on the ice.

Girls should always have their hair pulled back or restrained, so that it cannot get into the eyes.

Avoid letting your skater wear jewelry. Most rinks prohibit any kind of jewelry, which can break and fall onto the ice and trip another skater.

And finally a note to parents of boys: Boys will be extremely uncomfortable if they are asked to wear white skates. If you have inherited a pair of white skates that fit your boy, either dye them black (black shoe polish will also work, but it can be messy), or cover them with black skate covers. Your son will skate much more confidently if he “fits in” with the other boys at the rink.

If your child will be taking ice skating lessons, you can observe what the other students are wearing before the first lesson and talk to the coach about appropriate clothing for lessons.

Common Sense vs Red Jacket’s Speech to the US Senate

Thomas Paine was born in London on January 29, 1737. He was an Anglo-American political theorist and writer. Thomas Paine’s father tried to give him a good education, but was forced to have his son learn his trade and work. However, this did not stop Paine from writing the most influential pamphlet in America’s history. Paine immigrated to America in 1774 and just two years later published “Common Sense,” which contained the first thoughts of America becoming independent. Paine tried to make the American people see that we should become independent and he made it seem logical through out his pamphlet. (Columbia University, 2007)

“Common Sense” consists of an introduction and four chapters. Each chapter addresses a different perspective of why we should be independent. In Chapter One: Of the Origin and Design of Government in General,  Paine makes the distinction between society and government. In Chapter Two: Of Monarchy and Hereditary Succession, he addresses monarchy from a biblical perspective. In Chapter Three: Thoughts on the Present State of American Affairs, Paine talks about American and British hostilities and how when the British goes to war, so does America. In Chapter Four: Of the Present Ability of America, with Some Miscellaneous Reflexion, Paine talks about our military strength and the availability of natural resources. He makes it seem as if we can not loose, and we have nothing to loose. The chapter that I have chosen to focus on is the third chapter. (Owen, 2004)

Red Jacket was born in 1758 and died in 1830. He was the chief of the Seneca tribe. His Native American name was Otetiani, and later changed to Sagoyewatha when he became a chief. The name Red Jacket came from the British when they gave him a redcoat, much like the “Beefeaters” wore in London. He was well known for his exceptional articulation and talents in dealing with the whites. Red Jacket has been known to promote of hostilities against the colonists, but in the future he attempted to make peace with the U.S. government. In the War of 1812 he supported the United States. Red Jacket despises the ideas of white customs, especially Christianity and “firewater”. It has been said that Red Jacket was an alcoholic and regrets his first drink. (Columbia University, 2007)

Although Red Jacket’s speech is much shorter then “Common Sense” it addresses almost the same exact topics of religion, military strength and the obvious right to have their own land. “Common Sense” shows the colonists the obvious right to independence from Britain and Red Jacket’s speech shows the Native Americans that they should have the right to their own land, and to stop giving it up to the colonists.

One way that Red Jacket tries to appeal to the common man is by using the word “Brother” to start every sentence. When Red Jacket uses the word it is kind of an oxymoron. When Red Jacket uses the term brother, he is referring to the colonists. If one thinks about it, would a brother treat another brother the way that the colonists treated the Native Americans? If you look at the last few sentences in the first paragraph, on page 215, one can see that Red Jacket makes it very clear that the white man came and stole America at a steady pace. Red Jacket’s word choice is impeccable and he makes it clear to the Native Americans that they gave the colonists produce that would be beneficial for the colonists, when the colonists in return gave the Native Americans nothing but poison. The reason Red Jacket uses the term poison is because he had a huge problem with drinking and eventually turned into an alcoholic. (Costa Nunes, 1980)

The first encounter the reader has with the logical fallacy in the essay “Common Sense” is right in the introduction where Thomas Paine states “In the following pages I offer nothing more then plain arguments and common sense. This opening statement is true for throughout the essays. He makes his logics very clear and to the point.

The next logical point made by both Red Jacket and Paine utilizes the “it’s our country”, “it’s our right” card. When this point is brought up by both writers, they make it clear that since it is our country, freedom should obviously be in our hands, not at the hands of the superior. In the second paragraph on page 215, Red Jacket says “we took them to be friends. They called us brothers. We believed them…They wanted more land; They wanted our country.” In translation this means that when the colonists arrived in what is now America they kept taking more and more land which the Native Americans viewed as theirs. On page 331, of “Common Sense”, Paine states “A government of our own is our natural right.” Here Thomas Paine tries to convey the meaning that the only way we the people of the “New World” can be politically satisfied is if we break away from Great Britain and form a government of our own.

The next great point which is delivered by Red Jacket comes half way down page 215. Red Jacket says “You have got our country, but you are not satisfied; you want to force your religion upon us.” This statement must have struck home for a lot of the Native Americans, because this issue was not apparent in one or two tribes. This was apparent to all Native Americans. Throughout the time when colonists were evolving into citizens of the United States many of them felt that the Native Americans were uncivilized and that they had an unclear vision of religion. So many missionaries tried to sway the Native Americans to Christianity. Red Jacket makes a very clear point in the next paragraph where he basically says, if your religion is right and should be the only one out there, then why did we received a copy of the book? This statement does an excellent job of hitting home and making the idea not only clear, but obvious.

The next encounter with a logical fallacy that the reader comes across in Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense” is on page 328 when Paine talks about how the only reason Britain showed them any military support, which was minimal, is for the sole purpose of enhancing Britain. America was an economic decision to better Britain, and Britain does not want to see America fail because it is less money for Britain. On the next page Paine stays on the topic of military, however this time it is about how Britain’s military decisions and how they have direct impact on America. For instance, Paine says “Great Britain tends directly to involve this continent in European wars and quarrels, and set us at variance with nations who would otherwise seek our friendship.” Here Paine illustrates to the colonists how whenever Britain goes to war that country will cut off ties with America also, thus having a direct impact on the economy. The logical point that Paine portrays through these pages is the obvious fact of why wouldn’t we (America) want to sever all ties with a country that looks at us as pawns and brings us down with their military decisions.

When Red Jacket ends his speech he uses religion and the fact that the Native Americans just want to live in peace and enjoy their own religion. “Brother: We do not wish to destroy your religion or take it from you. We only want to enjoy our own. The way that Red Jacket utilized the peace tactic was great. Throughout this speech the reader can see that the Native Americans were defiantly taken advantage of by the colonists.

Dress Shirt Size Chart for Men

Readymade shirts have been ruling the overall market from quite some time. The new generation has almost forgotten that before the trend of readymade shirts that are bought from local clothing stores, there were tailor shops everywhere. In order to have a new dress shirt, one had to give measurements and wait for some days or a week for tailor to stitch the shirt. However, the trend of disposable and readymade things has changed the whole lifestyle of people. In dress shirts, people have again started noticing that readymade shirts bought from local stores have low quality stuff with ill fitted size and no style. The fabric is also of poor quality and is worn out after some time.

In order to overcome this lapse, trend of online custom dress shirts was introduced and started offering dress shirts on affordable price. The custom shirts bought from online stores gives the users open option to design their own shirts while selecting fabric, style, fitting and measurement of their own choice. The problem, which arises amid all these things are the lack of knowledge about dress shirt measurements and sizes. To buy a custom made shirt, it is necessary to know how to measure correctly. Size of readymade shirts available at local stores is based on neck size while arm length, chest size, waist and other sizes are adjusted according to neck size. Below we will discuss this important element so that one can take prompt decision.

This could help the audience for making proper decision for picking best dress shirts.

Measuring Neck Size

First, it is necessary for you to know your neck size as it determines the overall shirt size. To measure your shirt size, get a measurement tape and put it around your neck where the collar generally sits. Now measure your neck, while giving half-inch space for your neck movement. Then add increment of one or half inch more according to your comfort level. Some people like having tight collars whilst others feel suffocated with tight collars and prefer a loose one. To add increment some people just insert two of their fingers between neck and measure tape and get the required measurement. Mostly people have neck size of 14 inch to 16.5 inches.

Chest Size

Chest size is another major attribute for dress shirts. To measure your chest, help from another person would be needed, as you would be unable to get the exact measurement all by yourself. Stand up straight and get the measure tape around your chest and under your arms. Now exhale all your breath and measure the size. Keep your finger on the size and inhale deeply while expanding your chest, the size will automatically increase. Then add one or two fingers gap in between your chest and measure tape and note down the size. Men of average body physique have 34 to 44 inches chest size.

Sleeve Length

Like in chest, you will need an assistant to help you get exact measurements. Stand up straight, stretch, hold your one arm to your respective side and slightly bend it from elbow. Start measuring the sleeve length from middle of the back of neck, go across shoulder, down to your arm, while following the curve of shoulder and elbow and end it at wrist bone. It is better to repeat this process to get exact measurement. Add one inch as increment and consider the size as your sleeve length. If you are opting for athletic fit dress shirt then you would also need to measure the size of your biceps, which can be easily done by putting the measure tape around your bicep and tighten up your muscle to expand it and note down the size you get.

Waist Measurement

Most of the men generally know their waist size, as they have to check it every time they buy a pant. However, in shirt the waist size is little different, keeping in view the type of shirt you are going to opt. Simply put measure tape around your waist and get the waist size. If you want an athletic fit dress shirt then add one to one and half-inch increment in size. While if you want regular fit shirt then add up to three inches or more.

Conclusion:By following all the above mentioned points, one should be able to get his exact measurements and feel comfort while making formal dress shirt order.

Can I Wear Shearling Coats in All Types of Weather?

Among the variety of benefits that are offered by owning a shearling coat, including fashion sense and price, shearling coats are also perfectly suited for all types of weather. Unlike most other types of coats and jackets made from animal skin, these coats possess all of the qualities that allow them to be worn in most types of cooler weather, from cool to very cold. It is for these reasons that shearling coats are considered a “best buy” among consumers.

Like other garments made from animal skin, a shearling coat’s primary function is keeping the wearer warm during the colder months – while looking great at the same time. But because shearling coats are made from sheepskin, they are thinner and lighter than other garments made of fur and can be worn comfortably in relatively warmer temperatures.

How is this possible? Shearling coats and jackets contain insulated lining and are able to “breathe,” meaning they allow some interchange between the air inside and outside the jacket. This means that in either warm or cold temperatures the coats don’t allow the temperature inside the jacket go too far into one extreme or the other. In colder temperatures, the temperature inside the coat or jacket is warm, but not hot or stifling; and in warmer temperatures, the material allows some air-flow to keep the wearer cool.

You can tell which type of coat it suited for the varying weather conditions by the length of the coat. Jackets and cats that extended to the waist are intended to be worn during the temperatures that can range from cold to warm, generally between 50 and 70 degrees. The longer the coat is, the colder the weather it is intended for.

Of course, where you live will influence what style of coat you will need. The higher the latitude (i.e., the further north you are if above the equator, the further south you are if below the equator), the colder the winter months. That means the need for warmer coats. Be sure to buy a coat that matches the weather conditions of your area; otherwise you’ll be either too hot, or to cold in your shearling jacket if you have not bought the appropriate coat.

Shearling coats and jackets owe most of their usefulness to being thin and light. These qualities make these coats stand out compared to other garments made of fur. The coats are made of sheepskin of the highest quality from professionals who use hundreds of years of experience to create them. Most of these professionals are from Spain and South America, and have a history of tailoring many different types of clothes form the material. The coats are made to withstand any weather condition while remaining flexible and strong, keeping the wearer comfortable at all times.

In conjunction with the fashion and hardiness of shearling coats, they are also a great buy, with prices for these coats maintaining a steady price over the last several years. For the buyer interested in finding suitable clothing for colder temperatures that can also be fashionable outside the winter months, shearling coats are a must buy.

Screen Printing – Is It Outdated In The Digital Age?

T-shirt screen printing is one of the longest lasting manual print processes. While many forms of print production have moved into the digital age textile screen printing for apparel has stood the test of time as the most cost effective method of printing on to t-shirts.

With the inception of heat transfers and direct to garment digital printing, and the consistently improved ability to digitally print on to dark t-shirts, it would be easy to assume that the manual screen printing process will die out. While the digital methods are a fantastic and cost effective solution for short runs of t-shirts with a high colour content it is still far more cost effective to screen print on larger runs of t-shirts.

Rather than see the digital t-shirt printing advances as a threat, screen printers should see them as an added opportunity to offer services and capture customers that perhaps they couldn’t previously. When that kid comes in with a full colour photo of their favourite band and wants to print it on a shirt, in the past we would have had to turn them away. With the advent of the digital processes we are now able to offer them that service of a one off full colour t-shirt and with the right equipment, even on a black t-shirt!!

So rather than fear these digital advances I believe screen printing professionals should embrace the added revenue they can bring to their existing businesses and the plethora of new products they can now offer.

I think it will be a long time before a digital print on 1000 t-shirts will be a cheaper and longer lasting option than a screen printed image.

Job Interview Dress Code for a Rainy Day

What to wear to a job interview can be a complicated decision. You want to make a great first impression at the interview and you have painstakingly planned what to wear. Problem is, mother nature didn’t get the memo that your perfect job interview outfit did not take into consideration a rainy day.

So what do you do?

Well, you still want to show up dressed for a job interview, looking sharp and ready for success. Even though the interviewers may not remember what you are wearing, they should remember that your appearance was polished and professional. In the job interview, you will be evaluated on what you are wearing as much as what you are saying.

Here is a quick “job interview clothes” guide for a rainy day:

Clothes – The default job interview dress code is conservative or business attire. Wear a pant suit or dress pants on a rainy day. You will protect your legs from getting wet and it won’t be as noticeable. Stick to darker neutral colors like navy and black because you will still look sharp even if you get a little wet. I usually recommend a dress shirt or blouse in white or a light pastel color like pink, blue and green. But for a rainy day, I recommend staying away from white because you will end up with a see-through shirt if you do get soaked.

Shoes – You should never wear open shoes or sandals to an interview and a rainy day is no exception. Wear conservative pumps and make sure you select a pair of heels that isn’t too high since you will be navigating through wet and slippery terrain. Trust me, there will be puddles everywhere and your goal will be to do everything possible not to trip and fall in the parking lot, at the entrance of the building or in the lobby.

Accessories – If it’s raining, your best accessories will be a nice umbrella and matching raincoat. It’s hard to look professional when you are holding a multicolored umbrella with polka dots and wearing a bright red raincoat. Stick to dark neutral colors like black and navy to match your job interview outfit.

Hair – Your job interview hairstyle is the first to go on a rainy day and the hardest to put back together when you have left the house. Pick a simple hairstyle that is easy to fix in the event that it’s also a windy day. It can make or break your entire look. Again, you want it to be polished, not messy and out of place when you arrive. Choose to pull your hair back in a ponytail instead letting it hang loose if you can.

Purse – You’ll have plenty to hold already with an umbrella and raincoat in your hands so keep your purse or handbag small. Stick to a leather bag or briefcase since it wipes dry easily and carries off a professional look regardless of the weather.

Your attire for job interviews even on a rainy day only needs a couple of adjustments to work. Sounds pretty simple right?
