Richard Nordquist

Richard Nordquist is professor emeritus of rhetoric and English at Armstrong State University and the author of two grammar and composition textbooks for college freshmen, Writing Exercises: Building, Combining, and Revising (Macmillan) and Passages: A Writer's Guide (St. Martin's Press). Richard served as the Guide to Grammar & Composition from 2006 to 2016.


Richard has taught English composition, rhetoric, business communication, creative nonfiction, and literature to several thousand students (undergraduate and graduate). He has directed a university writing center, coordinated a large composition program, served as assistant dean of academic services, implemented a distance-learning program, and published numerous books and articles on grammar and rhetoric. He is also a freelance writer, professional editor, and writing consultant, and he has served as a visiting professor at Tallinn University (Tallinna Ülikool) in Estonia.

Richard holds a bachelor's degree in English from the State University of New York at Geneseo (with a year of study at the University of Nottingham in England), a master's degree in modern English and American literature from the University of Leicester in England, and a doctorate in English and rhetoric from the University of Georgia.
