The World's Fastest Cars

If it seems like cars that can hit over 200 mph are a dime a dozen these days, well, they are. Actually, more than a dime -- and more than a dozen. After combing the stats, making a list, and checking it twice (for verified speeds and acceleration times), I present to you the absolute fastest cars in the world ever produced. This list will certainly change as ever-higher horsepower is achieved. Take that, global warming.

The latest design from the Swedish mind of Christian von Koenigsegg will -- according to preliminary documents from Koenigsegg -- top the fastest Veyron by 7 mph.

Top Speed: 267 mph

0-60 mph: n/a

The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport set a record for production cars July 2010 at the company's test track. The cars that people can buy, though, have their top speed limited to a mere 258 mph, to save the tires, they say.

SSC Ultimate Aero

Top Speed: 257 mph

0-60 mph: 2.8 seconds

One of the fastest cars on the planet isn't made in Italy -- it's not even made in Europe. It's made in Eastern Washington state with a massive 1287 hp from a V8 engine if you can believe it.

Top speed: 253 mph

0-60 mph: 2.5 seconds

Well, this should surprise exactly no one: the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 tops the list of fastest cars in the world. And at $2 million, it's up there on the list of world's most expensive cars, too.

Koenigsegg CCXR

Koenigsegg CCXR

Top speed: 250- mph

0-62 mph: 3.1 seconds

The Koenigsegg CCX does fine on its own, with 806 hp, but the CCXR can guzzle ethanol, which ups its output to 1018 hp. E85, a blend of 85% ethanol, 15% gasoline, has a higher octane rating and greater cooling capacity, delivering faster times with the same exhaust temperature.

Koenigsegg CCR

Koenigsegg CCR

Top speed: 241 mph

0-60 mph: n/a

This is the car that ripped the fastest production car title from the legendary McLaren F1's hands. Only 14 CCR models were built between 2004 and 2006, making it as rare as it was fast.

McLaren F1

Top speed: 231 mph

0-60 mph: 3.2

The McLaren F1 climbs out of the 1990s to make a go at the "Greatest Supercar of All Time" title. Only 65 street legal cars were produced, making it one of the rarest, too.

Top speed: 230 mph

0-62 mph: TBD

The replacement for the Pagani Zonda holds its own right out of the gate, only one mile an hour behind the McLaren F1, which was built nearly 20 years before.

Ferrari FXX

Ferrari FXX

Top speed: 227 mph

0-62 mph: 2.8 seconds

The FXX was a track-only supercar -- and the Ferrari test track only, at that. Only a couple dozen were built and sold, and they were all kept at the factory in Maranello between workouts.

Top speed: 224 mph

0-62 mph: 3.0 seconds

This has been one of the fastest cars on the Nurburgring, at Hockenheim, and on the Top Gear test track as driven by The Stig.

Rapier Superlight Coupe

Rapier Superlight Coupe

Top speed: 222 mph

0-60 mph: 3.2

The Rapier Superlight Coupe is the latest in a line of cool stuff to come out of Boston (like Aerosmith and Mark Wahlberg, not like the Car Talk guys). The company claims its two prototypes are just a hair slower than the McLaren F1 of the 1990s, but for a fraction of the price.

Top speed: 220 mph

0-60 mph: 3.5 seconds (est.)

Even before production began, Aston had its supercar One-77 on the track, where it quickly joined the ranks of world's fastest cars in December 2009.

Top speed: 220 mph

0-62 mph: 3.7 seconds

Sometimes, the first time is a charm. The Pagani Zonda S, which debuted in 1999 in Geneva, is the fastest of all the Zondas that followed over the next decade.

Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4

Top speed: 217 mph

0-62 mph: 2.9 seconds

These numbers are so far based on rumors and Lamborghini's expectations for the Murcielago replacement. When the Aventador goes into production and starts hitting the streets -- and the test tracks -- we'll know for sure how it holds up.

Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR Stirling Moss

Kristen Hall-Geisler for

Top speed: 217 mph

0-60 mph: 3.5 seconds

While the limited-edition tribute to Formula 1 racer Stirling Moss isn't street legal in the U.S., it hardly matters when only 75 will ever be built. Besides, it's one of the fastest, and one of my favorites.

of 18

Jaguar XJ220

Jaguar XJ220
Jaguar XJ220. Jaguar Cars

Top speed: 212 mph

0-60 mph: less than 4 seconds

Another supercar rises from the ashes of the 1990s to make the short list of world's fastest cars. And that's after all the compromises Jag had to make to get the car built in the first place.

of 18

Lamborghini Murcielago SV

Kristen Hall-Geisler for

Top speed: 212 mph

0-60 mph: 3.2 seconds

Lamborghini only breaks into the list of world's fastest at number five -- and then only because it made the "super veloce" edition of the Murcielago, with its lighter weight and added horsepower.

of 18

Lamborghini Reventon

Lamborghini S.p.A.

Top speed: 211 mph

0-62 mph: 3.4 seconds

The fighter-jet-inspired Reventon is beat out by its Murcielago SV friend by a measly one mile per hour and two-tenths of a second. But the exclusive Reventon makes it onto the most expensive cars list. So there, Murci.
